I said in a recent post that we wanted to go back to Lake Ashby in Central Florida to capture some of this beautiful area in medium format film. Last week an opportunity arose. The chance of thunderstorms was less and the temperatures weren’t quite as hot as of late (plus or minus 5 degrees can make a huge difference in comfort level).
This time the mosquitoes were out in force and “Eau de Deet” was the perfume of the day by necessity. Darn they were relentless in their pursuit of sweet blood, trying their best to get into any part not covered by Deet – eyes, ears and nostrils. I even had to spray my hair with the stuff and use my ponytail much like a horse uses its tail!! Both Marks and I shot a roll of film each.
Marks’ images are drying after toning and I should be able to post those soon. Meanwhile here are a couple from me.
This was taken from the boardwalk which stretches some 1.5 miles along the shore of Lake Ashby and meanders back through the woods. Lake Ashby boasts some gorgeous Cypress trees along the shores and due to the low level of the water in the lake a lot of the root ball is above water.

One of the larger Cypress Tree root formations. This one, although hard to reference, is large enough to encompass a small car. From the buzzing sounds that were emanating from its dark depth, it was pretty obvious that it contained either a large bee or hornets nest. Neither of us were inclined to find out which. I took this one from the boardwalk. These roots are usually under water so it’s amazing to see their intricate formation.

Thanks for visiting.
Fantastic photographs, as always Joey, of nature’s beauty! And the lengths we’ll go to to enjoy it…
Best regards to you both!
Thanks so much Dries. This is a beautiful area, now if it would only cool down some and Florida’s national bird, the mosquito, would go into permanent hiding….. 🙂
Love the dimension, detail and depth you can pull out of scenes like this, what a great pair of images!!
Thanks so much Toad. Both of us believe that the combination of the film and the PMK development has a lot to do with that. We have seen a huge difference in the detail, edge effect and dimension since we started using the pyro type developers. Both Moersch Tanol and PMK are staining developers and are doing extraordinarily well. Will be posting some of Marks’ shots which really show some of that “edge effect” soon. Appreciate the visit and kind comment.
Joey
Great images Joey, thanks for sharing. I will have to do some studying to understand the technical aspects of your B&W processing.
Thanks Derek. We’re always happy to answer any questions you might have:-)))
